Build a character arc for a fictional story

A character who has interesting things happen to them and a character who actually changes are different achievements.

Outcome
A character whose internal change is driven by specific pressure from the plot, tested against the ending to confirm the change is earned rather than declared, and checked for consistency along the way.
Time
1-2 hours across sessions

A character can have a lot happen to them across a story without actually changing — events occur, but nothing about who the character is at the end differs meaningfully from the beginning, which makes the story feel eventful but not resonant. This playbook builds a real arc: define the specific internal change, connect it to concrete plot pressure that would plausibly cause it, then check the ending actually earns the change instead of just declaring it happened.

When not to use this

For a minor or background character who isn't meant to carry an arc, this full process is unnecessary — reserve it for characters whose change matters to the story.

Did this work?

The character's change by the end is something a reader would believe was earned by specific events, not something that could be swapped in without altering anything else about the story.

Tested on claude-opus-5. Evidence status is draft; it moves to battle-tested only on recorded runs, never by hand.
