Turn real events into a story worth telling, not just a timeline
What happened and what makes a good story are different questions.
- Outcome
- A story with real stakes, told from the right vantage point, structured around tension instead of chronology.
- Time
- 45-75 minutes

Turning real events into a story usually defaults to reporting them in order, which is a timeline, not a story — timelines are boring even when the underlying events were genuinely interesting, because chronology alone doesn't create stakes. This playbook finds the real tension in what happened, chooses the right vantage point to tell it from, and restructures around that tension instead of the order events actually occurred.
When not to use this
For a factual report where accuracy and completeness matter more than narrative tension, don't reshape it into a story. This is for when you're specifically trying to make real events compelling to hear.
Did this work?
A listener would ask "then what happened?" at least once, and the story reads as deliberately told, not a chronological report.
